Activity Description: 

This activity exposes learners to the real‑world, multidisciplinary process of lung transplant candidate evaluation and decision‑making. Participants will learn how clinical data, disease severity, transplant benefit, psychosocial factors, ethical considerations, and resource limitations are collectively reviewed to determine transplant eligibility and timing. Through structured committee discussions, learners gain insight into applying evidence‑based selection criteria, resolving differences in expert opinion, documenting consensus decisions, and aligning transplant selection practices with the goal of equitable organ allocation and improved patient outcomes.

Physicians, Staff Nurses, Medical Residents, Interns, Students, Dietitians, Pharmacists, Physical Therapists, Respiratory Technicians, Speech Therapists

Learning objectives: 

Apply evidence‑based and standardized criteria to assess lung transplant candidacy, including medical, psychosocial, and functional risk factors. Strengthen multidisciplinary decision‑making skills through collaborative discussion with pulmonology, surgery, anesthesia, ethics, and transplant coordination teams. Improve clinical judgment in balancing transplant benefit versus risk to optimize organ allocation and patient outcomes. Enhance documentation and communication of selection decisions to ensure transparency, consistency, and medico‑legal robustness. Recognize system‑level factors (e.g., social support, adherence, access to care) that impact post‑transplant success and long‑term outcomes.
