Topic: Female Urinary Incontinence: A Primary Care Guide to Evaluation & Management

Speaker: Dr Seema Sheth

Learning Objectives:

  • Classify the major types of female urinary incontinence — stress (SUI), urgency (UUI), and mixed — and describe their underlying pathophysiologic mechanisms
  • Conduct an evidence-based initial evaluation of female UI using history, physical examination, and urinalysis, without routine urodynamics, cystoscopy, or imaging
  • Apply first-line behavioral therapies — including pelvic floor muscle training and bladder training — appropriately for both SUI and overactive bladder (OAB).
  • Select appropriate pharmacotherapy for OAB through shared decision-making, distinguishing the benefits and risks of antimuscarinics versus beta-3 agonists
  • Identify indications for specialist referral to urology or urogynecology, including red flag symptoms, treatment failure, and surgical candidacy for SUI.

Topic: Hematuria in Primary Care: A Practical Guide to Diagnosis, Assessment, and Evaluation
