Topic: Anesthetic Considerations in Patients on IABP and ECMO

Learning Objectives:

1. Describe the basic principles, components, and physiological effects of intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).

2. Differentiate between IABP, venoarterial (VA) ECMO, and venovenous (VV) ECMO in terms of their indications, mechanisms of support, and haemodynamic effects.

3. Outline the key principles of perioperative management of patients receiving IABP or ECMO support, including monitoring, haemodynamic optimisation, and recognition and initial management of common complications.
