Topic: Anesthetic Considerations in Patients on Impella and LVAD

  1. Describe the basic principles, components, and physiological effects of left ventricular assist devices (LVAD) and Impella.

  2. Differentiate between durable LVADs and temporary Impella support in terms of their indications, mechanisms of circulatory support, and haemodynamic effects.

  3. Outline the key principles of perioperative management of patients receiving LVAD or Impella support, including device assessment, haemodynamic optimisation, monitoring, and recognition and initial management of common complications
